Thesis Binding
Recommended and approved binder for UEA theses.
The style of binding fulfils the conditions of most universities and is as follows.- Text is both glued and sewn – 140 gsm Cartridge endpapers – spine is linen lined.
- Hard Case is made from 3mm greyboard covered in waterproof buckram.
- Soft has the same waterproof buckram glued direct to the endpapers.
- Lettering of both hard & soft covers is based on –
- Spine - Degree, year, name in 24pt Times
- Front - Title up to 4 lines set in 24pt Times. - NOTE THERE IS A SURCHARGE FOR EXTRA LINES OR NON STANDARD FONTS
Art Project Specials
For Art Projects there are the following options available:- Normal hard case book as a thesis or dissertation.
- As above but with a soft cover.
- Postbinder with screws so you can change content.
- Make sure the paper you are using is the right grain
- Also not to stiff – books need to open!
- Keep the project simple – more work higher price.
- You will be constrained for lettering on the fonts available.
- I have a set of binding tools NOT A MAGIC WAND!
Repairs - What can be done?
Spine detached or missing – lift original material on boards insert new spine, letter or replace old spine. (From £25.00)
Book falling out of cover – remove old linings, replace endpapers or insert cloth joints, glue, reline and re case. (From £30.00)
Covers of book missing – repair text as necessary; make new cover and block title, re-case. (From £30.00)
Text of book has become a collection of loose pages – repair torn pages, re-sew, rebind in new or original cover as appropriate (From £35.00)
Before you contact the binder, consider the following points:
- Is the book available second hand or even new, cheaper than renovating your own book?
- Will the book have frequent use?
- How important is preserving the original binding? Often rebinds are cheaper.
- Will any work on the book devalue it?
- How bad is the present binding? No good saying there are a few loose pages when it more resembles a collection of loose leaves.
